Mission and Goals of the School
The school is committed to providing students with a diversified learning environment, so that students can develop in a balanced attitude in moral, intellectual, physical, social and aesthetic education, and become young people who love the country and Hong Kong, and have excellent character and learning. In addition, the school attaches great importance to nurturing students' civic consciousness and enabling them to have a sound personality to establish a correct outlook on life and values, and is dedicated to maintaining close ties and cooperation with families and communities to empower students to grow up healthily.
Management & Organization
The school sponsoring body of Heung To Middle School is Heung To Education Organization, which is a registered non-profit-making organisation. Established in 1946, the school is directly subsidized with a high degree of autonomy and flexibility in organization and management. In the spirit of school-based management, the School Management Committee and the School Affairs Committee jointly formulate the overall school development plan, and the School Office, Student Development Office and General Affairs Office co-ordinate and plan the daily school affairs, and cooperate with the working committee composed of teachers to implement the overall school development plan. The school has always implemented the integration of discipline and guidance, and the practising system of the class teacher is one of the characteristics of the school.
School facilities
The campus is located in the residential area of Kowloon Tong, providing the students with a tranquil and beautiful learning environment. The campus is conveniently located close to the MTR station, railway station and bus terminus. The school is air-conditioned, with 24 standard classrooms and a number of classrooms for group study, as well as 13 special rooms, including chemistry, biology, physics and science laboratories, a multimedia language learning room for 50 people, a state-of-the-art computer room and an information technology room, an English corner for NET teachers, a well-stocked library, a visual arts room, a music room and a study room. There are also a hall, a mini-hall and a covered playground.
Learning and teaching
All teachers are diligent in their work, focusing on teaching work, and each subject team holds regular meetings, and has set up systems such as collaboration lesson preparation, lesson observation and exchange, learning questionnaires and teaching evaluation to improve teaching effectiveness.
The school attaches great importance to cultivating students' biliteracy and trilingual ability, and became one of the first schools to participate in Using Putonghua to Teach Chinese Language Subject Scheme. Chinese is taught in Putonghua in Secondary 1, with two classes in Secondary 2 and 3 teaching Chinese and one class teaching Chinese in Secondary 4. In addition, in order to improve students' English proficiency, the English subject of Secondary 1 is taught in groups, and the whole level is divided into six groups, and appropriate school-based teaching materials are designed according to students' abilities. English lessons are added at all levels of senior secondary and speaking classes are conducted in small groups, and English enrichment classes are set up in secondary 4 to improve students' listening and speaking skills in self-learning English. Secondary 6 also provides group tutorials after class every day to gradually improve students' English proficiency.
In order to enable students to learn more effectively, our teachers are constantly developing new teaching elements, including Chinese, English, Mathematics, Liberal Studies, Computer and Information Technology, etc., which are equipped with school-based curricula to better cater for students' learning needs.
The school makes good use of the Development Grant to provide a wide range of learning experiences, and organises different types of academic activities to explore the potential of gifted students.
School ethos and student support
The school is rigorous and simple, the relationship between teachers and students is harmonious, and great importance of students' learning and life is attached. Commendation cards were set up to commend students' good behaviour, and there were "Heung To Star Award Scheme", "Self-improvement Award Scheme" and "Rainbow After Rain Scheme" to actively promote a positive culture. Teachers conduct regular home visits to establish good communication with parents. The Parent-Teacher Association and the Alumni Association have been established for more than 40 years and have given strong support to the school. The school provides basic learning classes for junior secondary students and provides diversified support for newly arrived students, including adaptation and English tuition classes. The school also provides scholarships and bursaries for outstanding and financially challenged students. In order to broaden students' horizons, the school regularly organises study trips to Yunnan, Shanxi, Sichuan, Qinghai, Xinyi, Inner Mongolia, Guizhou and Hunan provinces to conduct field trips and learning, so as to enhance students' perceptual understanding and rational reflection on the motherland during the learning journey.
Academic and non-academic performance
In the old academic system prior to 2012, the average pass rate of the annual entrance examination exceeded 90%, the excellent rate was nearly 40%, and there were 9 As and 8 As students over the years. Every year, about 50 A-Level students went on to study at local universities, with an overall articulation rate of nearly 90%. In the HKDSE Examination under the new academic structure, the first batch of students performed well, with 54 students admitted to government-funded local university degree programmes, of which 30 were admitted to HKU, CUHK and HKUST.
At the same time, the school attaches great importance to students' non-academic performance, and has implemented the "Heung To Star" Award Scheme to recognise students with good performance in academic style and conduct, and some students have been selected for the "Gifted Scheme" of the Institute of Gifted Education organised by the Education Bureau. The Students' Union aims to develop students' leadership and work skills, and the Volunteer Service and Mentorship Program provide students with opportunities to serve the community. The music day and the extra-curricular activities show are held every year to promote the development of extra-curricular activities.
In order to widen students' horizons and grow healthily, there are various activities at each level, including Secondary 1 Military Training Camp, Secondary 2 Adventure Training Camp, Secondary 3 Marine Adventure Training Camp, Secondary 4 Exploration Camp and Secondary 5 Road Camp, to cultivate students' healthy minds step by step.
