Strategies for transitioning from Junior to New Senior Secondary Education

Chinese Language

The goal of Chinese Language teaching in junior forms is to build a solid foundation and cultivate interest, laying a strong foundation for the new senior secondary Chinese Language curriculum. Specific measures include:
  1. School-based Materials: School-based materials are used from Form 1 to Form 3. They are characterized by placing emphasis on reading, synchronous exercises, and the inclusion of reading strategies. For example, in Form 1, emphasis is placed on questioning techniques and organizing text content using diagrams; in Form 2, emphasis is placed on summarizing the main points of articles; and in Form 3, emphasis is placed on comprehensive abilities, enabling students to build a solid foundation in junior secondary.

  2. Fundamental Chinese Language Knowledge: To help the students gradually accumulating knowledge, ten fundamental Chinese language exercises are set for each term from Form 1 to Form 3.

  3. Reading Aloud of Classics: Students from Form 1 to Form 5 read aloud classic poems and prose before class to cultivate a sense of language and strengthen their reading ability in classical Chinese.

  4. Speaking Skills: Form 3 offers speaking classes in small groups, systematically teaching speaking skills and thinking methods, preparing students for the TSA and laying a foundation for learning speaking in the new senior secondary.

English Language

  • Teaching Modules

The junior form school-based curriculum has been designed on a module basis, which advocates a thematic approach on the training of the four generic skills, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is to better prepare students for a theme-based format of the HKDSE papers.

  • Language Arts

As electives of non-language arts are introduced in the New Senior Secondary (NSS), the junior form school-based curriculum covers materials on language arts, such as poetry and popular culture through speaking and writing activities, particularly in S3.

  • Speaking

A reading and speaking package has been designed to familiarize junior form students with the skills of oral presentation by teaching them to give oral reflections on designated class readers. S3 students are intensively trained on discussion skills for TSA as well as a preparation for Paper 4 (Speaking) of HKDSE and School-based Assessment (SBA) in NSS.

  • Reading

Extensive reading is strongly emphasized throughout the entire junior secondary, ERS and SRA (later changed to LightSail) English reading lessons are conducted on a regular basis. This is to enrich vocabulary and enhance reading experience of students so that they can better adapt to the requirements of the NSS, which engages them in more authentic and practical contexts of English usage. Students become familiarized with the question types of Paper 1 (Reading) of HKDSE doing the comprehension exercises of SRA (later changed to LightSail) passages.

Liberal Studies and Social Development

The Junior Secondary Liberal Studies curriculum is comprehensively planned to align with the new Senior Secondary Liberal Studies. The school's curriculum is primarily divided into four parts:
  1. National Education

  2. Growth Education

  3. History and Culture

  4. Extracurricular Activities

This lays a solid knowledge foundation for students, while broadening their knowledge and horizons, with the aim of helping them excel in future public examinations.

Visual Arts and Music

Visual Arts introduces learning portfolios from Form 1 and focuses on thematic studies. The subject adopts a theme-based approach, requiring students to carry out theme-based creating and designing tasks, while Music provides students with professional training in listening, performance, and creation from Form 1 onwards to align with the new Senior Secondary curriculum.

Other Learning Experiences

Aiming at the all-round development of students, other learning experiences outside of academics are planned according to the needs of different students:
Grade Educational Objectives Suggested Learning Content
Form 1 Learn self-discipline and obedience Military training in mainland Chinese military academies
Form 2 Learn teamwork, positivity, and courage Adventure training
Form 3 Deepen teamwork and positive, courageous spirit Sea adventure training
Form 4 Enable students to understand the economic and community development of Hong Kong's neighboring regions and build awareness of the work environment; recognize different cultures and broaden their horizons. Organize an "Exploration Camp" to enhance students' understanding of the real-life conditions and economic development of Guangdong Province through field trips, and to encourage them to explore and think critically.
Form 5 Enable students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses, and thus establish life goals and plan for public examinations and further studies. Organize a "Lead to Fly Camp" with diverse activities such as lectures, theater workshops, visits to nine major universities, simulated results announcement, and university life to encourage students to think, share, and explore their future academic pathways.

Facility Development

The school has submitted an application and plan to the government for campus expansion, with the following goals:
  1. Establish a "Learning Resources Center" and a "School Campus TV"

  2. Add a "Multi-purpose Activity Room"

  3. Expand the library

  4. Increase the number of classrooms for small-class teaching

  5. Optimize teaching equipment in classrooms
